Mexico – Agua Prieta
Every winter we go into the poorest part of A.P.just across the international border from Douglas, AZ and through the Ladrillo Project we build a simple shelter. (Some years we've built two!) Work is done on Saturdays starting the second Saturday in January. We leave from the SELC church parking lot at 7:30am or join us at the McDonald’s in Douglas at 8:30am. Anyone not wanting to drive across the border can carpool. Bring gloves, hat, water and a lunch. Tools are provided. All ages and skill levels are welcomed, as there is something for everyone to do. Whether you visit with the local children, share a Bible, fill water buckets or shovel concrete, you will be in for a gratifying experience. We will begin another house in Agua Prieta, Mexico as part of the Ladrillo Project which is run out of the Agua Prieta Family Shelters Inc., Their website: www.apahelters.org for more information.
Lithuania
Through the Grand Canyon Synod we partner with the Lutheran Church in Lithuania. Our sister parish is in Klaipeda. The Pastor is ReinholdasMoras. Please visit their website. We are looking for people who would like to nurture this relationship through email, prayers and maybe even a visit. (Klaipeda is a beautiful city on the Baltic Sea. Contact Pastor Mark Perry.
Rock Point, AZ
The ELCA supports a school at Rock Point that has 63 students. There is a thrift shop there too. Doctors, nurses and dentists go there to volunteer their services as well. For years the Women of SELC has sponsored a student. We were part of a hogan building project in August, 2003. Members of SELC who can tell you more are Rich and Linda Radwick, Marty Huffman, and Dave Dechant.
