Our Pastor


Trained at California Lutheran University, Pastor Mark Perry received his baccalaureate degree in History from Arizona State University, and his Master of Divinity degree from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary.  Mark was ordained in 1986, and has served parishes in Sylmar, CA, Mesa and Phoenix, AZ, prior to becoming the Pastor for Faith Formation and Action
at Tanque Verde Lutheran Church in Tucson in 2001.

Having led peer ministry training in his former parish, he is eager to employ those strategies here.  “Growing leaders is a large part of ministry” for the Sierra Vista newcomer.  Whether it is guiding youth or adults within the parish to tackle leadership roles, Perry’s strength in coaching those achievements is one he brings to Sierra Lutheran.            There’s more: “He has a pastoral heart,” said the Rev. Gregory Adolph, Pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church.  He’s known Mark since he was a young lad and recognizes a most important virtue.            “I felt a call to be a lead pastor,” explains Perry.  While at Tanque Verde, his duties were more specific while SELC offers a broader pastorate.  With a staff and new challenges here, and because of the encouragement of the bishop, “I felt I could serve well at the helm,” he said.  He has been eying the goal ever since.

It was in the high school youth group, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Phoenix, where he met his future wife, Linda.  His dad was an associate pastor there at the time.  The two were married after college on April 17, 1982.  Three daughters were born to the couple...all on holidays.

A sci-fi afficionado, Mark Perry likes to read fantasy works.  He’s read “Lord of the Rings” ten times to prove it!  When not reading more academic tomes, he enjoys imaginative writing.  And he enjoys films as well.
