Christa Compton Teaches & Preaches to Our World
hey’re flying rapidly by...bachelors, then masters, and finally doctoral degrees...with yet at least another scrolled parchment wafting ahead. Degree by degree Sierra Evangelical Lutheran Church’s new pastoral intern, Christa Compton, has built her professional foundation to teach students English, and then, on a university level, to teach teachers how to teach their students more effectively, and now she’s exploring how she can combine the love of teaching, and Christ’s urgent command to preach the Gospel into a vocation of grace as a parish pastor. Blessed with an engaging smile, Compton is proud of her nine years teaching high school English, as well as her seven year instructing prospective teachers on the means to accomplish their goals. At the University of Virginia, she claimed her first degree...then sailed on to earn both a Masters degree and a Ph.D. focused on her love of teaching, at Stanford University, which brought her to the West. For the last two years she has studied at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley...aiming not just for one more degree, but a deepened kind of service. At Stanford, her field of research examined both the education of teachers, and theological education with focuses on the role of supervision in preparing novices for these positions. In 2001, Ms Compton was named both South Carolina State Teacher of the Year and a national finalist by the state’s Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, & Advancement. Originally from Lexington, South Carolina, near the Palmetto state capital of Columbia, in a region widely settled by German Lutherans as they immigrated to the States, young Compton grew up with her parents and two adults do and say, and they are often more bold about speaking the truth. I think that’s one of the blessings of life in the church. We can be God’s family together and make sure we recognize when we need to reach out to someone.” “I now appreciate even more than ever the blessings that come for the intern pastor, the congregation and myself,” says Lead Pastor Mark Perry, “having now served as an Intern Supervisor for three interns since beginning my pastorate at Sierra Lutheran Church 23 months ago. Members really enjoy getting to know each intern pastor’s unique perspectives, gifts and personalities.” He concludes by observing, “It is a privilege and a joy for us all to participate in the training of pastors who go out to serve the larger church in many different capacities.” Blessed with a maturing and grappling faith, Intern Pastor Compton possesses vast knowledge already, but it will be immensely adjusted when she receives her Master of Divinity degree in June 2013. The internship year goes from September to August. This cheerful lady with the ready smile and bright eyes will be assuming many pastoral roles throughout that time. Degree by degree she will gain up-front and personal experience as well as confront exciting challenges.
